What Were the Last Words of Jesus Before He Ascended?

The last recorded words of Jesus immediately before the Ascension are found in Acts: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After saying this, he was lifted up before their eyes. That matters because the final words before the Ascension were not words of retreat, defeat, or confusion. They were words of promise and mission. Jesus did not leave his followers with vague feelings. He left them with divine authority, a clear task, and the promise of supernatural help through the Holy Spirit.

Some people think the Bible is inconsistent because Matthew records the Great Commission, Luke records the command to remain in the city until they are clothed with power from on high, and Acts records the witness command tied directly to the visible Ascension.

But this is not a contradiction. It is what we should expect from truthful witnesses who emphasize different parts of the same final period of instruction. Matthew highlights the command to make disciples of all nations. Luke highlights the promise of the Father and the blessing near Bethany. Acts gives the final words spoken just before Jesus was taken up. These accounts work together, not against each other.

The content of those last words is also deeply important. Jesus points his disciples away from political speculation and toward worldwide witness. They asked about restoring the kingdom to Israel, but he redirected them to the true kingdom mission: proclaiming him to the world in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Christianity did not spread because frightened disciples invented a story and hid in silence. It spread because the risen Christ commissioned witnesses, promised them power, and sent them out. The Church was built on this command, not on wishful thinking.

So what were the last words of Jesus before he ascended? In the most direct sense, Acts gives them: his followers would receive power and become his witnesses to the ends of the earth. That final message still stands. Christ reigns in heaven, the Holy Spirit is given, and the mission continues.

The Ascension, as described in the post What Happened on Ascension Day? The Bible Story and Why It Matters, was not the end of the work of Christ. It was the moment he sent his people into the world with heaven behind them and truth in their mouths.
