Following Napoleon's political collapse, Pope Pius VII was finally released. He made a triumphal re-entry into Rome on May 24, 1814. To show his profound gratitude to God and to honor Mary's maternal care during the Church's time of trial, he officially established the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians on the anniversary of his return.
