Taste and See That the Lord Is Good — Psalm 34:8

"Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him"

— Psalm 34:8, NIV

This is one of the warmest invitations in the Bible. God does not simply ask us to hear that He is good. He invites us to find out for ourselves.

Think about how we come to love a certain food. Someone can describe it to us, but we only truly know it when we taste it. Faith works in a similar way. We can read about God's goodness, listen to sermons, and hear the stories of others, but there comes a moment when we must trust Him personally and experience His care in our own lives.

David wrote this psalm after a time of great danger. He was not speaking from a comfortable place. He had been afraid, he had cried out to God, and God had answered him. His words come from real experience, not from theory.

The second half of the verse tells us how to taste God's goodness: by taking refuge in Him. A refuge is a safe place we run to when danger comes. When we bring our worries, needs, and failures to God instead of carrying them alone, we begin to discover how faithful He is. Each answered prayer, each moment of peace, and each unexpected provision becomes another taste of His goodness.

God's goodness does not depend on our circumstances. Even on difficult days, He is still kind, still patient, and still near. Sometimes we notice His goodness most clearly when life is hard.

Today, take one small step of trust. Pray about something you have been holding on to, and watch for the ways God responds. The more you trust Him, the more you will see that the Lord is good.

Lord, help me not only to know about Your goodness but to experience it. Teach me to run to You as my refuge. Amen.
