The Lord Is My Shepherd — Psalm 23:1
"The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing"
— Psalm 23:1, NIV
These opening words of Psalm 23 are among the best-loved lines in the Bible. People read them at funerals, pray them in hospital beds, and hold on to them in times of fear. Yet the meaning of Psalm 23:1 is not only for our hardest days. It is a daily promise that God cares for us personally.
David, who wrote this psalm, had been a shepherd himself. He knew that sheep cannot look after themselves. They wander, they get lost, and they cannot find food or water on their own. A good shepherd leads them, protects them, and knows each one by name. When David called the Lord his shepherd, he was saying that God does all of this for him.
Notice that David did not say "the Lord is a shepherd." He said "my shepherd." This is personal. God is not a distant ruler watching from far away. He is close, and He is involved in every part of your life, including your work, your family, your health, and your worries.
The second half of the verse can be harder to accept: "I lack nothing." Many of us feel we lack a great deal. But David was not claiming to have everything he wanted. He was saying that with God as his shepherd, he had everything he truly needed. God may not grant every wish, but He never fails to provide what is good for us.
Jesus later called Himself the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11). Trusting God does not mean life will be free of trouble. It means we never face trouble alone.
Today, whatever is worrying you, place it in the Shepherd's hands. He knows the way, and He will lead you.
Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd. Help me trust that in You I lack nothing. Amen.
