Guard Your Heart — Proverbs 4:23
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it"
— Proverbs 4:23, NIV
Of all the advice in the book of Proverbs, this verse stands out because it begins with the words "above all else." It points to the one thing we must protect more carefully than anything else we own.
In the Bible, the heart means more than our feelings. It is the core of who we are: our thoughts, desires, choices, and beliefs. That is why the verse says everything we do flows from it. Our words and actions are like water flowing from a spring. If the spring is clean, the water will be clean. If it is polluted, everything downstream is affected.
We usually guard the things we value. We lock our doors, protect our money, and look after our health. Yet many of us leave our hearts wide open to whatever comes along. What we watch, what we read, the conversations we join, and the thoughts we allow to settle in our minds all shape our hearts over time.
Guarding the heart does not mean shutting ourselves off from people or the world. It means being careful about what we let in. Bitterness, envy, lust, and resentment often begin as small thoughts that we entertain instead of reject. Left unchecked, they grow and eventually show up in our words and actions.
We cannot guard our hearts by willpower alone. We need God's help. Filling our minds with His word, spending time in prayer, and choosing good friends all help protect what matters most. Paul encourages us to think about whatever is true, noble, right, pure, and lovely (Philippians 4:8).
Today, pay attention to what is entering your heart. If something is pulling you away from God, set it aside, and fill that space with what is good.
Lord, help me guard my heart. Keep it clean and close to You, so that my words and actions bring You glory. Amen.
