Is Jesus God or the Son of God? What the Bible Says
Jesus is both God and the Son of God. These are not two different answers. Christians did not invent the title “Son of God.” God gave it, through the angel Gabriel, through His own voice from heaven and through Jesus Himself. It does not mean that God had a biological child with a wife. Did you know that this was the very first question asked about the title? Mary asked it of the angel Gabriel, and he answered it.
Jesus is both, and the Son of God is not a biological son. God had no wife, and Jesus had no human father. The title means Jesus shares the Father’s own divine nature as a distinct Person, from eternity. Gabriel announced it, and the Father confirmed it from heaven twice.

Is Jesus God or the Son of God?
Both. The Bible presents Jesus as fully God and, at the same time, as the Son of God. One verse says both at once: “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18).
Christians believe in one God in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. “Son” names who Jesus is within the one God, not a second, smaller god. How God can be three Persons in one is explained in its own article.
Does “Son of God” Mean God Had a Biological Son?
No. Christians have never believed that God took a wife or fathered a child. That idea is a misunderstanding of what Christians believe, and it is most often raised from Islamic teaching. The Quran asks: “How could He have a son when He does not have a companion and He created all things?” (Quran 6:101).
Look closely at how the question works. It assumes that the only way to have a son is through a wife. That is true of creatures, but it measures God by what creatures can do. Christians say God’s Son is not a son in that way at all. The question attacks a belief neither the Bible nor Christians hold.
Muslims who read the title this way inadvertently contradict their own Quran. In its account of the annunciation, written about six centuries after the Gospels, Mary asks, “How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?” (Quran 19:20). The answer given is that God decrees it (Quran 19:21). By the Quran’s own account, then, no union took place. To claim that calling Jesus the Son of God means God had a son by a woman contradicts the Quran’s own account of how Jesus was conceived.
The real disagreement is not about biology. It is about who Jesus is: whether He shares God’s own nature. That deeper question is answered in Do Christians and Muslims Worship the Same God?
What Did Mary Ask the Angel Gabriel?
Mary asked the biological question. When Gabriel told her she would have a son, Luke records: “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” (Luke 1:34).
Pause on that. The first person ever told that Jesus would be the Son of God asked how a child could come without a man. It is the question critics ask today, and it was answered before Jesus was born.
Gabriel’s answer was not “through a husband.” It was: “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).
Notice the word “So.” The angel gives the title as the answer to Mary’s question. Jesus is called the Son of God because of the work of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Most High, not because of any union. The first time the title appears in the Gospel story, the biological meaning is ruled out in the same breath.
Why Do Christians Call Jesus the Son of God?
Because God gave Him that title. Christians did not reason their way to it or borrow it from anyone.
The angel announced it
Gabriel told Mary her Son “will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). The title began in heaven, before Jesus was born, not with the disciples.
God the Father confirmed it, twice
At Jesus’ baptism, “a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased’” (Mark 1:11). On the mountain of the Transfiguration, God spoke again: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” (Mark 9:7). The second time, the Father added a command: listen to Him.
Jesus claimed it, and His enemies confirmed it
Jesus said, “Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?” (John 10:36). His accusers told Pilate: “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God” (John 19:7). Accusers do not invent a charge that makes the accused look greater, so the claim that the church made up the title later does not hold.
Why Was Jesus Accused of Blasphemy?
For calling God His own Father in a way that made Him equal with God. The objection is not new: it was put to Jesus Himself. His opponents tried to kill Him because “he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:18). Later they said, “We are not stoning you for any good work… but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33).
Notice what they did not accuse Him of. No one in His day thought Jesus was claiming that God had a wife. They understood “Son” as a claim to share God’s own nature, and that is exactly why they objected.
Jesus did not take the claim back. He explained what He meant by “Son,” and none of it is physical:
- The Son does what the Father does. “Whatever the Father does the Son also does” (John 5:19).
- The Son gives life. “The Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it” (John 5:21).
- The Son judges the world. “The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son” (John 5:22).
- The Son receives the Father’s honor. “That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father” (John 5:23).
Giving life, judging the world and receiving God’s own honor belong to God alone. By Jesus’ own definition, the Son of God is One who does what only God does.
What Does “Son of God” Mean?
It means that Jesus shares God’s own nature and is a distinct Person from the Father. A human son is fully human, just as his father is. In the same way, the Son of God is fully God, just as the Father is.
The Bible itself shows how “son of” is used. Jesus called James and John “sons of thunder” (Mark 3:17). The apostles called Joseph of Cyprus “son of encouragement” (Acts 4:36). Paul tells believers, “You are all children of the light and children of the day” (1 Thessalonians 5:5). No one thinks thunder had sons. In the Bible’s way of speaking, “son of” something means having its nature or character.
The Bible also gives two more pictures of the Son, and each rules out a wrong idea:
- The Word. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). A word comes from a person, yet nothing physical is born. This rules out a physical birth.
- The radiance. “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory” (Hebrews 1:3). As an illustration: sunlight comes from the sun, yet there was never a sun without its light. This rules out the idea that “from” means “after” or “less.”
“Son” is the most personal of the three: a word or a ray of light cannot love, but a son is loved. “This is my Son, whom I love” (Mark 9:7).
| “Son of God” does NOT mean | “Son of God” DOES mean |
|---|---|
| God had a child with a wife | Jesus shares the Father’s divine nature |
| Jesus had a beginning | The Son has always existed (John 1:1; 17:5) |
| Jesus is a lesser being | The Son receives the same honor as the Father (John 5:23) |
| There are two gods | One God, in whom the Father and the Son are distinct Persons |
Others are called God’s children: Adam by creation (Luke 3:38) and believers by adoption (John 1:12). Jesus alone is God’s “one and only Son” (John 3:16), the Son by nature.
When Did Jesus Become the Son of God?
Never. Jesus did not become the Son of God at any point. He has always been the Son. “In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1), and that Word “became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14).
Jesus spoke of “the glory I had with you before the world began” (John 17:5). Paul says that God “sent his Son, born of a woman” (Galatians 4:4). You can only send someone who already exists. Luke 1:35 tells us when the Son became man, not when He became the Son. (See the meaning of the virgin birth.)
Why Did Jesus Call Himself the Son of Man?
“Son of Man” was the title Jesus used for Himself most often, about 80 times in the Gospels. It shows that He was truly human, and it also claims divine authority.
Jesus took it from Daniel’s vision of “one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven,” whom “all nations and peoples of every language worshiped” (Daniel 7:13–14). Worship by all nations belongs to God alone.
At His trial, Jesus joined both titles. Asked whether He was “the Son of the Blessed One,” He answered: “I am… And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Mark 14:61–62). The high priest called it blasphemy.
Does Being the Son Make Jesus Less Than God?
No. A son is not less human than his father, and the Son is not less divine than the Father. “Father” and “Son” describe how the two Persons are related, not how much of God each is. This is the key to the verses critics quote:
- “The Father is greater than I” (John 14:28). Jesus said this as a man on His way to the cross. Christians understand it to describe His humble place on earth, not a lower nature.
- “Nor the Son” knows the day of His return (Mark 13:32). This shows Jesus truly took on human limits (see how Jesus can be fully God and fully human).
Frequently Asked Questions
If Jesus is God, who was He praying to?
He was praying to the Father. The Father and the Son are distinct Persons, so the Son can speak to the Father, as He did in Gethsemane: “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).
Is Jesus the Son of God or the son of Mary?
Both. Jesus was truly born of Mary, and the people of Nazareth knew Him as “Mary’s son” (Mark 6:3). He is also the eternal Son of God. The angel named both relationships in one message (Luke 1:31–32).
What does “only begotten Son” mean?
It is the King James wording of John 3:16; the NIV says “one and only Son.” It means Jesus is the Son in a way no one else is: unique, not created, sharing the Father’s nature.
