Teach Us to Number Our Days — Psalm 90:12
"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom"
— Psalm 90:12, NIV
This short prayer asks God for something we all need: the wisdom to use our time well.
Psalm 90 is the only psalm described as a prayer of Moses. In it, Moses compares the eternal nature of God with the brief life of human beings. He says our lives are like grass that grows in the morning and withers by evening. It is a sober reminder, but it is not meant to make us gloomy. It is meant to make us wise.
To "number our days" does not mean counting how many birthdays we have left. It means understanding that our time on earth is limited and precious. When we forget this, we easily waste our days on things that do not matter, or we put off what matters most.
Many of us live as if there will always be more time. We plan to call a friend, forgive someone, spend time with our children, or grow closer to God, but we keep saying "later." Numbering our days helps us see that today is a gift we should not waste.
The goal of this prayer is "a heart of wisdom." Wisdom is not simply knowing facts. It is knowing how to live well before God. A wise heart sets the right priorities, values people above possessions, and keeps eternity in view.
This verse is also a prayer, not only a lesson. Moses asked God to teach him. We cannot learn this kind of wisdom on our own. God gently shows us what truly matters when we ask Him.
Today, think about how you are spending your time. If there is something important you have been putting off, let today be the day you begin. Ask God to help you live each day with purpose.
Lord, teach me to number my days. Help me use the time You have given me wisely, and keep my heart focused on what matters most. Amen.
