The Fear of the Lord Is the Beginning of Knowledge — Proverbs 1:7
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction"

This verse sets the tone for the whole book of Proverbs. Before offering practical advice about work, money, friendship, and family, the book tells us where true understanding starts.
Many people are puzzled by the phrase "the fear of the Lord." It does not mean being terrified of God or living in dread of punishment. It means having deep respect and awe for who God is. It is the kind of reverence that takes Him seriously, values His word, and wants to please Him.
This reverence is the starting point of knowledge because it puts God in His rightful place. When we accept that God is the Creator and we are His creatures, we begin to see the world as it really is. Without that foundation, even great learning can lead us in the wrong direction.
The verse does not say that knowledge ends with the fear of the Lord. It says it begins there. God is not against learning, study, or discovery. Respect for God gives our learning a firm foundation and keeps us humble about what we know.
The second half of the verse gives a warning: "fools despise wisdom and instruction." In Proverbs, a fool is not someone with low intelligence. It is someone who refuses to listen, will not accept correction, and thinks he knows better than God. Clever people can still act foolishly when pride closes their ears.
This verse invites us to approach life with a humble and teachable heart. When we make decisions, face problems, or look for answers, our first step should be to turn to God and seek His guidance.
Today, begin with God. Before you plan your day, read a little of His word and ask Him for wisdom. He promises to give it generously to those who ask (James 1:5).
Lord, give me a heart that respects You and listens to Your word. Teach me true wisdom, and keep me humble. Amen.
