The Lord Is Close to the Brokenhearted — Psalm 34:18

Few verses bring more comfort to people who are hurting. If your heart is heavy today, this promise is for you.
A broken heart can come in many ways. It may be the death of someone we love, a failed marriage, a betrayal by a friend, a lost job, or a long illness. Sometimes it is a sadness we cannot even explain. In those moments, many people feel that God is far away. This verse tells us the opposite is true.
Notice that the verse does not say God stays close only to the strong, the cheerful, or those who have everything together. He draws near to the brokenhearted. When we are at our weakest, He comes closer, not further away. Our pain does not push God away; it draws His compassion.
The verse also says that God "saves those who are crushed in spirit." To be crushed in spirit is to feel that you have no strength left to carry on. God does not expect us to rescue ourselves. He lifts us up when we cannot lift ourselves. His healing may not come all at once, but it does come, often one day at a time.
Jesus showed this same tenderness throughout His life. He wept with grieving friends, touched the sick, and welcomed those whom others ignored. That is the heart of God toward you.
If you are hurting today, you do not need to hide your pain or pretend to be fine. Bring your broken heart to God just as it is. Tell Him how you feel. He is listening, and He is near.
Lord, You know the pain I carry. Thank You for being close to me when my heart is broken. Heal me, hold me, and give me strength for today. Amen.
