Do Not Misuse the Name of the Lord — Exodus 20:7

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name”

— Exodus 20:7, NIV

This commandment teaches that God’s name is holy and should always be spoken with honor.

Many people know this verse in its older wording: “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” It is one of the Ten Commandments God gave to Moses at Mount Sinai, right after the command to have no other gods before Him.

In the Bible, a name stands for the person. God’s name represents who He is: holy, faithful and good. How we speak His name shows what we really think of Him.

The most common misuse is careless speech. God’s name is often used as a curse, or tossed into conversation as a simple exclamation, in person and online, without a thought for who He is.

There is also a more serious misuse. It is using God’s name to support what He never said. Think of someone forging your signature on a document you never agreed to. When people say “God told me” to win an argument, make a dishonest promise, or justify unkind behavior, they are signing God’s name to something that is not His.

Notice that the verse says “misuse,” not “use.” God does not want us to be afraid to say His name. We are invited to call on Him in prayer, thank Him and speak of Him to others. Honoring His name begins with a heart that respects Him, which is why the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9). To hallow His name simply means to treat it as holy.

Today, listen to how you speak about God. If His name has become careless on your lips, ask His forgiveness, and use it today only to pray and to praise.

Lord, Your name is holy. Guard my lips, and help me honor Your name in every word I speak. Amen.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Exodus 20:7 (NIV)
