God Is Love — 1 John 4:8
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love”
— 1 John 4:8, NIV
Love is not only something God does; it is who He is, and those who truly know Him learn to love as He does.
John wrote these words to believers, urging them to love one another. Notice what he says. He does not say that God has love, or even that God loves, though both are true. He says, “God is love.” Love is at the very center of who God is.
That changes how we see Him. When life is hard, we may wonder whether God still cares. But His love does not rise and fall with our feelings or our success. Like the sun behind clouds, it keeps shining even when we cannot see it. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and His love reaches us on our darkest days.
How can we be sure of that love? Scripture points to the cross: “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God did not wait for us to become lovable.
God’s love is not soft approval of everything we do. A loving parent sometimes says no. God’s love is holy, and it calls us away from what harms us and others.
The first half of the verse is a gentle test: love shows whether we know God. “Love is patient, love is kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4). In daily life, it looks like patience with a slow coworker, kindness to a tired spouse, or choosing to overlook an offense rather than keep score.
None of us loves perfectly. But the more we receive God’s love, the more it flows through us to others.
Today, think of one person who is hard to love. Do one quiet act of kindness for them, as a gift from the love God has shown you.
Lord, thank You that You are love. Fill my heart with Your love, and help me show it to everyone I meet today. Amen.
