You Are the Light of the World (Matthew 5:14)

Jesus: The Cornerstone

In the foundation of Christian faith, Jesus Christ is celebrated as "The Cornerstone." This term, rich with architectural significance, symbolizes Jesus' central role in the spiritual life and faith of believers. As a cornerstone is fundamental in building a stable and aligned structure, Jesus is essential for a life that is balanced, strong, and aligned with God’s will. Let's explore the depth and breadth of what it means for Jesus to be the Cornerstone of our faith.

The Bedrock of Faith

The concept of a cornerstone in construction is that of the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. It is vital because all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure. Ephesians 2:20 tells us, "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone." In this spiritual building, Jesus is the reference point from which everything else derives its orientation and coherence.

Unshakable Security

In a world where uncertainties and challenges can shake our sense of security, the idea of Jesus as the Cornerstone offers unparalleled peace and stability. His teachings, sacrifice, and resurrection provide a foundation that remains steadfast through life’s storms. "So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic'" (Isaiah 28:16). Trusting in Jesus allows us to build our lives on a foundation that will never fail us.

Alignment with God’s Will

Just as a cornerstone ensures the alignment of a building, Jesus, as the Cornerstone, ensures our lives are aligned with God’s perfect will. Aligning our lives with Jesus means making His teachings, His love, and His sacrifice the reference point for every decision and action. It is about living a life that reflects His love and follows His example of service, compassion, and righteousness.

A Foundation of Hope

Believing in Jesus as the Cornerstone also means laying a foundation of hope in our lives. The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate evidence of His victory over sin and death—a victory that He shares with all who believe in Him. "Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved" (Ephesians 2:4-5). Recognizing Jesus as the Cornerstone affects not just individual believers but the entire community of faith. 1 Peter 2:4-5 encourages us, "As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house."
