Daily Lenten Reflection – Friday of the First Week of Lent (February 27, 2026)

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed” (Luke 12:15).

This is a warning, not a suggestion. ‘Watch out.’ It is not about need, but about greed. That is the distinction that must be made. Greed does not always appear obvious. It hides behind ambition, comfort, success, and even responsibility. A person may appear disciplined and hardworking, yet the heart can still be driven by the desire for more. This daily Lenten reflection brings that hidden danger into focus.

Greed is not only about wealth. It is about attachment. It is the constant pull toward having more, keeping more, and wanting more, even when enough has already been given. It shifts trust away from God and places it in possessions, status, or control. What begins as desire slowly becomes dependence.

Modern life often encourages this mindset. More is presented as better. Accumulation is seen as progress. But Scripture warns that this path does not lead to life. Greed narrows the heart. It makes generosity difficult and gratitude rare. It creates anxiety, not peace.

The command is to be on guard. This means awareness. It means examining motives, not just actions. Why is something desired. What is driving the pursuit. These are not easy questions, but they reveal what holds the heart.

Lent is a time to confront what has taken hold within. Greed cannot be managed. It must be resisted. A heart that clings to possessions cannot fully trust God. But a heart that loosens its grip begins to experience freedom.

The warning is clear. Guard the heart. What is allowed to grow within will shape the life that follows.
