Why Is Good Friday Called Good?

Many people ask why Good Friday is called good if it marks the suffering and death of Jesus. It is a fair question. On the surface, there seems to be nothing good about betrayal, injustice, torture, and crucifixion. But the name does not refer to the pain itself. It refers to what was accomplished through it.

Good Friday is the day Jesus was crucified. He was arrested, falsely accused, mocked, beaten, and nailed to the cross. From a human point of view, this looks like complete failure. An innocent man dies in public humiliation. If the story ended there, the word “good” would make no sense.

But the death of Jesus was not meaningless. He accepted it willingly. He had already spoken about laying down His life. The cross was not a tragic accident. It was part of His mission.

Why was it necessary? Because sin is real, and human beings cannot fix the problem by themselves. The cross shows the seriousness of that problem. It also shows the depth of divine love. Jesus bore what humanity could not bear, and paid what humanity could not pay. That is why Good Friday is called good.

It is good because justice and mercy meet at the cross. It is good because forgiveness becomes possible. It is good because the barrier between God and humanity is broken down. It is good because the cross leads to the resurrection.

The goodness of Good Friday is not found in suffering, but in salvation. The pain was terrible, but the purpose was greater. Through the death of Jesus came the hope of eternal life.

This is why Christians do not avoid the cross. They look at it honestly and still call the day good. Not because the cruelty was good, but because the outcome was.

Good Friday is called good because what looked like defeat became the turning point of history.
