When I Am Afraid, I Will Trust in You — Psalm 56:3
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you"
— Psalm 56:3, NIV
Some Bibles word it, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you." Either way, this short verse is one of the most practical promises in Scripture for anyone who struggles with fear.
David wrote this psalm when he was in real danger. Enemies had seized him, and his life was under threat. He was not a man who never felt afraid. He was a man who knew what to do with his fear.
Notice that David did not say "if I am afraid." He said "when." He accepted that fear is part of life. Even people of strong faith feel anxious at times. Fear itself is not a sin or a sign of weak faith. What matters is where we turn when fear comes.
David made a choice. Instead of letting fear control him, he placed his trust in God. Trust is not a feeling that suddenly replaces fear. It is a decision to rely on God even while our hearts are still racing. Often the fear fades only after we have chosen to trust.
The next verse shows where this choice leads: "in God I trust and am not afraid" (Psalm 56:4). David moved from being afraid to being unafraid because he remembered how great and faithful God is.
You may be facing a fear today: a medical test, a difficult conversation, money problems, or worry about someone you love. You do not need to pretend the fear is not there. Simply bring it to God and say, "I am afraid, but I trust You."
That small prayer can steady your heart more than you might expect.
Lord, when fear rises in me, help me turn to You. I choose to trust You today, even when I do not feel brave. Amen.
