Anxiety Weighs Down the Heart — Proverbs 12:25
"Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up"
— Proverbs 12:25, NIV
This short verse describes something almost everyone has felt. Worry is heavy. It can sit on our hearts like a load we cannot put down.
Anxiety comes in many forms. We worry about our health, our children, our jobs, our bills, and our future. Sometimes we worry about things that may never happen. Over time, this weight can drain our energy, steal our sleep, and rob us of joy. The Bible does not pretend that anxiety is unreal or unimportant. It names it honestly.
But the verse also points to something simple and powerful: "a kind word cheers it up." God often uses ordinary people and ordinary words to lift heavy hearts. A phone call, a short message, a word of encouragement, or a gentle reminder that someone cares can make a real difference.
This verse invites us to look in two directions. First, if you are carrying worry today, do not carry it alone. Share it with God, who tells us to cast all our anxiety on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). Share it also with someone you trust. If anxiety feels overwhelming or will not lift, speaking with a doctor or trained professional is a wise and caring step.
Second, look around you. Someone near you may be quietly carrying a heavy load. You may never know what a kind word means to them. It costs very little to encourage someone, but it can lighten their burden more than you imagine.
Jesus Himself spoke tender words to weary people: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). His kindness is the greatest comfort for an anxious heart.
Today, bring your worries to God. Then, find one person who needs encouragement and give them a kind word.
Lord, take the weight of worry from my heart. Help me rest in Your care and bring comfort to others. Amen.
