Reckless Words Pierce Like a Sword — Proverbs 12:18

"The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing"

— Proverbs 12:18, NIV

This verse reminds us that our words are never neutral. They can either wound or heal.

Most of us can remember something hurtful that was said to us years ago. The person who said it may have forgotten it long ago, but the wound stayed. That is the power of reckless words. Like a sword, they cut deep, and the damage can last far longer than the moment they were spoken.

Reckless words are words spoken without thought. They often come out when we are angry, tired, frustrated, or trying to be clever. A harsh remark, a cutting joke, an unfair criticism, or careless gossip can hurt someone deeply, even if we did not mean to. Today, reckless words also travel quickly through text messages, emails, and social media, where they can be read again and again.

The second half of the verse offers a better way: "the tongue of the wise brings healing." Wise words are chosen carefully. They are honest but kind, truthful but gentle. A word of encouragement, a sincere apology, or a simple "I am proud of you" can lift a heavy heart and restore a damaged relationship.

Jesus taught that our words reveal what is in our hearts (Luke 6:45). If we want our speech to heal rather than hurt, we need God to shape our hearts first. James also reminds us to be quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:19).

Today, before you speak, pause for a moment. Ask whether your words will build up or tear down. If you have hurt someone with careless words, consider making it right. And look for one person you can encourage with a kind and healing word.

Lord, guard my tongue. Help me speak words that heal, encourage, and reflect Your love. Amen.
