A Gentle Answer Turns Away Wrath — Proverbs 15:1
"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger"
— Proverbs 15:1, NIV
This well-known proverb gives practical wisdom for one of the most common moments in life: what to do when someone is angry with us.
Our natural reaction is to answer anger in the same tone. When someone raises their voice, we raise ours. When someone speaks sharply, we reply even more sharply. Before long, a small disagreement has become a heated argument, and both people say things they later regret.
This verse shows a better way. A gentle answer works like water on a fire. It does not add fuel to the anger; it cools it down. A calm, respectful reply often takes the heat out of a tense moment and opens the door to real conversation.
Being gentle does not mean being weak, and it does not mean pretending to agree. We can still speak the truth and stand firm on what is right. Gentleness is about how we speak, not whether we speak. In fact, it takes far more strength to stay calm under pressure than to lose our temper.
The second half of the verse warns that "a harsh word stirs up anger." Harsh words rarely settle anything. As another proverb says, reckless words pierce like swords (Proverbs 12:18), and the wounds they leave can outlast the argument itself.
Jesus showed this gentleness perfectly. When He was insulted, He did not insult in return (1 Peter 2:23). His calm strength came from complete trust in His Father.
A gentle answer usually begins before we open our mouths. When our hearts are at peace with God, our words are more likely to be gentle too. That is one reason Scripture urges us to guard our hearts.
Today, if someone speaks to you in anger, pause before you reply. Take a breath, pray quietly, and choose a gentle answer.
Lord, help me answer anger with gentleness. Fill my heart with Your peace so that my words bring calm, not conflict. Amen.
