Trust in the Lord With All Your Heart — Proverbs 3:5

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding"

— Proverbs 3:5, NIV

This is one of the best-known verses in the Bible, and for good reason. It speaks to one of the greatest struggles in the Christian life: learning to rely on God instead of ourselves.

Notice the words "with all your heart." God does not ask for partial trust, where we rely on Him in some areas but keep control of others. He asks for complete trust. That includes our finances, our health, our relationships, our future, and even the things we do not understand.

The verse then warns us not to "lean" on our own understanding. To lean on something is to put your full weight on it. Our own understanding is not bad, and God gave us minds to use. But human understanding is limited. We cannot see the future, we do not know every detail, and our judgment is often affected by fear, pride, or emotion. If we lean on it completely, it can give way beneath us.

Trusting God is especially hard when life does not make sense. A prayer seems unanswered, a door closes, or a plan falls apart. In those moments, we want explanations. God does not always give them, but He does give Himself. Trust means believing He is good and wise even when we cannot see what He is doing.

The next verse contains a wonderful promise: "in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:6). When we place our lives in God's hands, He guides us, even through winding and uncertain roads.

Today, bring to God the situation that confuses or worries you most. Tell Him honestly that you do not understand it, and choose to trust Him anyway.

Lord, I choose to trust You with all my heart. When I do not understand, help me lean on You and not on myself. Amen.
