Pride Goes Before Destruction — Proverbs 16:18

"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall"

— Proverbs 16:18, NIV

This verse is so well known that many people use a shorter form of it, "pride comes before a fall," without realizing it comes from the Bible. Its message is simple but serious: pride is dangerous.

Pride is more than feeling pleased with a job well done. In the Bible, pride is an attitude of the heart that puts self at the center. It says, "I know best," "I do not need help," and "I do not need God." A haughty spirit looks down on others and refuses to admit mistakes.

The danger of pride is that it blinds us. A proud person stops listening to advice, ignores warning signs, and believes he cannot fail. Like someone walking confidently toward a cliff edge without looking, he does not see the fall coming until it is too late. History and everyday life are full of examples: leaders who ignored wise counsel, businesses that collapsed through overconfidence, and families broken because no one would say sorry.

Pride also damages our relationship with God. When we rely completely on ourselves, we stop depending on Him. That is why Scripture urges us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding.

The opposite of pride is humility. Humility is not thinking poorly of ourselves. It is seeing ourselves honestly, as people who are loved by God yet completely dependent on Him. A humble heart is teachable, and as Proverbs reminds us, true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.

Jesus showed perfect humility. Though He was the Son of God, He washed His disciples' feet and gave His life for others.

Today, ask God to show you any area where pride has taken root. It may be a refusal to apologize, to accept advice, or to ask for help. Choose humility, and let God lift you up in His time.

Lord, guard me from pride. Give me a humble and teachable heart, and help me depend on You in everything. Amen.
