You Are the Light of the World (Matthew 5:14)

On this seventeenth day of Lent of Lenten reflection, we contemplate the reassuring words of Psalm 27:1, "The Lord is my light and my salvation." This verse is a declaration of trust and confidence in God, a reminder of His unwavering presence and protection in our lives.

The metaphor of God as light is rich in meaning. In Scripture, light often symbolizes purity, truth, and guidance. To say "The Lord is my light" is to acknowledge God as the source of truth and wisdom in our lives. He illuminates our path, guiding us through the darkness of uncertainty, doubt, and fear. In the light of God's presence, the shadows of sin and despair are dispelled, offering clarity and direction.

"The Lord is my salvation" speaks of God as our deliverer and protector. It is a recognition of our dependence on Him for rescue and safety, both spiritually and physically. In the context of Lent, a season marked by reflection on sin and redemption, these words remind us of the ultimate salvation we have through Jesus Christ — salvation from sin, death, and eternal separation from God.

Lent is a journey towards the cross, where the concepts of light and salvation converge. Jesus, in His death and resurrection, conquered the darkness of sin and brought us into the marvelous light of God’s kingdom.
