Daily Lenten Reflection – Second Sunday of Lent (March 1, 2026)

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name” (Exodus 20:7).

This command is clear and direct. The name of God is not to be misused. It is not to be spoken lightly, turned into profanity, or used carelessly in anger or habit. The name of the Lord is holy. Yet in everyday speech, in entertainment, and in casual conversation, the name of God and the name of Jesus are often used as if they mean nothing. This daily Lenten reflection brings attention to a sin that has become widely accepted.

When something sacred is repeated without reverence, people stop noticing. What once would have been shocking is now treated as normal speech. But normal does not mean right. Scripture does not change because culture changes. God does not overlook the misuse of His name simply because it has become common.

The commandment reminds us that words matter. Speech reveals what the heart values. A person who truly respects God will not treat His name as a casual expression. Reverence begins with recognizing that the name of God represents His presence, His authority, and His holiness.

The misuse of the name of God also reveals a deeper spiritual problem. When reverence disappears from speech, it often disappears from life. Faith becomes superficial, and the sacred becomes ordinary. This is why the command carries such seriousness. God will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.

Lent is a time to correct what has become careless. Words should reflect truth, not disrespect. When the name of God is treated as holy again, the heart begins to return to where it belongs.
